January 11, 2019

Dear Parents,

This Tuesday January 15th is picture day!

Whole class and individual pictures will be taken.

This Friday January

18th is a half day of school.

Second quarter conferences will be held on

this day. A conference sheet was sent home

on Friday, please check your child's folder.

If you would like a conference, and one was not scheduled please

let the teacher know.

In Honor of Martin Luther King, there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday January 21st. See you Tuesday January 22nd.

One Hundred Days of School is right around the corner! We will be celebrating this milestone on January 30th. The students will wear a t-shirt with 100 objects on it. ( Use the front side of the t-shirt only).  This project will be done at home. You can be as creative as you like.

This  week we are going to be working with the letter Nn. The vocabulary words that we are going to be focusing on are: nail, necklace, noodles, nest, napkin, nine, newspaper, numbers, nuts, nurse, net, neck, needle, noise, and nose.

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some stories that we are going to be reading with the children are:

Nate is the nicest newt in the neighborhood. We will find out what happens when he decides to be naughty!!!

It's a rainy afternoon and Granny is snoring on the bed in a cozy room. A child crawls on top of her and dreams. Gradually, the pile increases with a dozing dog, a snoozing cat, a slumbering mouse and finally a wakeful flea who, by biting the mouse, sets off a chain of events which results in a broken pile and even a broken bed.
This is a wonderful little story about two birds who decide that they no longer like their old house and go on a quest to find a new house. However every house they find is either occupied or has hidden traps.

The sight words that we are going to continue working with this week are: but, not like, my, ten, we. Please take 15 minutes every day to practice them at home with your child. It is very important for all of them to recognize all the sight words we have covered in class so far. Once they can recognize sight words it is going to be a lot easier for them to read books.

We will continue working on Onset Rime. Decoding is also an important skill for early readers as it helps them to figure out words they don't know. Word families or onset rime is a common tool in word level literacy instruction that can help students to learn to decode.

In Math we will continue counting  and working with numbers up to 30. We will also focus on counting by 10's and 5's up to 100.

This week in Social Studies we will be learning about the great Martin Luther King and his dream for the world.
