WEEK OF MARCH 31- APRIL 4

This week we are going to be working with the letter Ww. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: wagon, watch, watermelon, web, water, wheel, whistle, wing, wink, worm, walrus, wreath, well, window, and windmill.
If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.
Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Everyone wants a ride in worm's wagon, but will worm be able to pull the weight? The children will laugh and learn as we read this wacky tale that teaches the letter W.

The story focuses on a young boy named Max, who, after dressing in his wolf costume, wreaks havoc through his household and is disciplined by being sent to his bedroom. As he feels agitation with his mother, Max's bedroom undergoes a mysterious transformation into a jungle environment, and he winds up sailing to an island inhabited by malicious beasts known as the "Wild Things."

A little boy, called Peter, would like to whistle to call his dog Willie and try very hard but couldn't figure out how to do it. Peter sees other children whistling for their dogs. He tried to whistle in varieties of ways between spinning, hiding in boxes, coloring with chalks, pretending to be his father, walking the cracks in the sidewalks but failed. After many attempts he finally whistles for his dog Willie. He showed his parents he can whistle. When his parents sent him to buy some grocery for them he whistles to and from the grocery store.

The five new sight words for this week are: six, pink, seven, white, eight, and gray.
This week the children will continue making words in a variety of ways. We will be dictating CVC words for them to write. They will be using letter tiles and magnetic letters to spell words. The children will also have the chance to write words on the board with markers. As students make words, they increase their word knowledge, discover patterns, and become better readers and writers. You may want to try these exercises at home too. The children are all very excited to know that they are writing and reading on their own.

In Math, we are going to continue working with Time to the hour. We are going to be looking at differences on digital and analog clocks.
The children have been practicing counting by ones, by fives and by tens. This week we are going to challenge them and we will start counting by 2´s.

In our Social Studies unit, the children are having a blast learning about SPACE. Last week we learned about the Sun and the Moon. This week we are going to be talking about the Planet Mercury. Ask your little ones about what they know, and you will be amazed to hear their responses.

We would like to thank everyone for contributing with last Friday´s Farewell Party for Jay. The children really had an amazing time.

For NEXT week, we would like the children to bring their own KITE. This Kite should be in school on Tuesday April 8th.

This Friday April 4th, we are planning to have a MATH RALLY with the First Graders. The children will all be divided into groups and they will help each other accomplish the goal of every Math Station they will be going to. This will help them review all the concepts that we have been covering in class.
Please practice the following IXL skills with the students. We have noticed that children are not using IXL and this is a great tool for them to practice at home.

Time
M.1     Match clocks and times
M.2    Read clocks and write times

Measurement

WEEK OF MARCH 24-28

This week we are going to be working with the letter Qq. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: quarter, quail, queen, quiet, quick, question mark, quilt, and quiche.
If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Quincy Quail can’t stand Dotty Duck’s loud quacking. We will learn how a noisy friend can be quite wonderful in this touching tale that teaches the letter Q.

A celebration of a child's growing self awareness, and a prime example of how books can contribute to this. Whether brave or shy, strong or weak, in the end the young boy celebrates all different, apparently contradictory parts of himself.

A pioneer mother lovingly stitches a beautiful quilt which warms and comforts her daughter Abigail; many years later another mother mends and patches it for her little girl.

We are going to be working with magnetic letters to form words. We are going to dictate words for the students to look for each letter they hear. They will surely have lots of fun. This might be an excellent game for you to play at home also. Try it out and you will all be amazed of what an excellent job they are doing.
The five new sight words for this week are: three, red, four, yellow, and five.

In Math, we will begin to work with TIME. The children will be exploring clocks and matching the correct time with cards.
We will also be reviewing solid shapes. Please practice this vocabulary words with them: sphere, cylinder, pyramid, cube, and cone. Ask them to look for objects around the house that are these particular shapes.

This week we are going to start studying about SPACE. This week we will mainly focus on talking about the sun, moon, gravity and solar system. If you have any stories at home that can help us understand these concepts better, please send them over with your child. This is a theme that mostly kids enjoy. We are going to be studying this theme for one whole month!

We are going to have a b-day celebration on Monday, March 24th. Pizza and cake will be provided. You do not need to send lunch with your child on this day.

WEEK OF MARCH 17-21

This week we are going to be working with the letter Xx. As you know, there are not that many words that begin with this letter. For this reason, we are also going to talk about words that have this letter at the middle, or at the end of it. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: xylophone, x-ray, taxi, box, mix, fox.
If you have any items at home that begin or end with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.
Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

X-ray fish wants a xylophone for his birthday, but will he get his wish?

Christina’s mother gets a new refrigerator… and with it, a giant box — a child’s dream!  It becomes a castle, a clubhouse, a racing car, a dance floor, and more.  Christina’s mother is going crazy and wants the box gone — but Christina always has one more idea.

Matthew's mom is just like all the other moms. She has ordinary hair, ordinary clothes, and a nice smile. Matthew's mom is just like all the other moms . . . EXCEPT she has X-RAY VISION! How else could she always know what Matthew is up to? She knows when he jumps on the bed, or when he uses her pots and pans outside, and she even knows when he is wrestling with sea monsters in the bathtub! Matthew is sure his mom can see through things just like a superhero!

In the story, Dr. Seuss presents a statement concerning the environment in his own original way. The Lorax "speaks for the trees" and tries to save the Truffula trees from the greedy Once-ler. The Lorax protects the trees and all the creatures that inhabit them. When the Once-ler comes and desires to cut down the Truffula trees, the Lorax tries to stop him, but he fails. The Once-ler cuts down every last Truffula tree, pollutes the environment, and drives all the creatures, including the Lorax, off the land. We will find out what happens next!!!

On Monday, we are going to be having an Irish family (Isabella´s McCaul parents) coming into our classroom to explain to us about this special day. They will be doing some fun activities with us. Students should wear anything green on this day!

For the following four weeks, our sights words will be based on numbers and colors. For this week our five sight words are: one, green, two, blue, and zero. Please practice these and the previous sight words with your child at home.
In our Phonemic Awareness, we are going to be spelling CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant). We will encourage the students in class with various games for them to play and have fun. Encourage them at home also, and you will be amazed to find out how capable they are.

In Math, we are going to be talking about the concepts of capacity and weight. We are going to be weighing objects around the room to see which one is heavier. We will also be pouring water in different containers to see if they can hold the same amount of water.

In our theme, we are going to be talking about our Environment. We will be discussing ways in which we can help the environment stay clean. We will also be doing a mini unit about reading maps.

We have talked to the students that we have started the hot season in Honduras. Please provide your child with a water bottle every day. Have them wear light clothes; they can bring a hat to protect from the sun, put sunscreen on their face and arms.

WEEK OF MARCH 3-7

Dear Parents,

This week we will have a Dr. Seuss story time every day of the week which will include cake on Friday!!!

We are going to be exposing the students to a variety of his books. If you happen to have books of Dr. Seuss, we are kindly requesting you to send them with your child to school. We will be sending them back on Friday. Dr. Seuss has a collection of more than 50 books and we would really like the children to be exposed to the majority of them. We are going to be watching and reading his biography. We will also be watching and reading some of the stories that the children are not familiar with. We would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs. Paige (Nora´s mom) and Mrs. Jenks (Ellyn´s mom) for always sending in books for us to read in class.

We would like to thank in advance Mrs. Noguera (Jordan´s mom). She will be donating a Dr. Seuss cake on Friday for the students to enjoy.

Some of the stories that we will be watching and reading this week are the following:

The story follows a boy named Marco, who describes a parade of imaginary people and vehicles traveling along a road, Mulberry Street, in an elaborate fantasy story he dreams up to tell his father at the end of his walk. However, when he arrives home he decides instead to tell his father what he actually saw—a simple horse and wagon.

This is the first picture book biography of Dr. Seuss, written especially for his young fans who want to know what made him tick. The animals in the zoo that his father ran and his fondness for drawing them, the injustices he suffered as the child of German immigrants and his inherent sense of humor all fed into the imagination of this boy. He was a square peg in a round hole until he found that he could make a living doing exactly what he pleased—doodling and writing funny things about the world as he saw it.

In the book, Gerald McGrew is a kid who, when visiting a zoo, finds that the exotic animals are "not good enough". He says that if he ran the zoo, he would let all of the current animals free and find new, more bizarre and exotic ones. Throughout the book he lists these creatures, starting with a lion with ten feet and escalating to more imaginative creatures, such as the Fizza-ma-Wizza-ma-Dill, "the world's biggest bird from the island of Gwark, who eats only pine trees, and spits out the bark."

"My eyes see. His eyes see. I see him. And he sees me." With text as simple as simple can be, Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Seuss) uses humor and rhythm to encourage the very youngest children to discover the joy of reading. A big-eyed boy and a pink-eyed rabbit cavort through the book, seeing everything there is to see: a girl, a horse, an old tin can, the sun, the moon--even pink underpants (which make them both blush).

"I see a nose on every face. I see noses every place!” Noses come in all shapes, colors, and sizes and are handy to have for sniffling, smelling, and . . . playing horns? This simple, sometimes silly story offers little ones a first ode to the nose and all that it does.

We invite to you visit the following links with your child. These sites include books, games, activities, and more about Dr. Seuss that you can do with your child at home.
