Week of March 16-20

Dear Parents,
This week we are going to be working with the letter Hh. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following:hamburger, hammer, hanger, hospital, honey, hippopotamus, hose, hopscotch, helmet, helicopter, hive, hair, hay, hotdog, and hula hoops.
If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.
Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Where is Baby Hippo hiding? We will help his mother find him in this hilarious hide-and-seek story that teaches the letter H.

Harry is a white dog with black spots who loves everything . . . except baths. So one day before bath time, Harry runs away. He plays outside all day long, digging and sliding in everything from garden soil to pavement tar. By the time he returns home, Harry is so dirty he looks like a black dog with white spots. His family doesn't even recognize him!
Convinced the sky is falling, Henny Penny and a band of gullible friends march off to tell the king, only to meet their end at the hands of a wily fox.

Horace Hippo has everything a hippo could want or need - well almost everything... Horace's dad is a very busy hippo, and Horace never gets to see him. So when Horace's dad promises to play with him one day, Horace waits all day and night. Finally having become fed up waiting, Horace digs a hole, covers it with grass, and traps his father as he walks out in the morning. Horace's dad takes it all with good humor and the two then spend the entire day together!
The five new sight words for this week are: your, when, use, how, and will. We are now up to 65 sight words!!! Please practice them with your child at home!!!

EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY READ-A-THON – This is week three of the Early Childhood and Elementary READ – A – THON for grades K-5. Please remind your child(ren) to read as much as they can, and to record their books in the Reading Log that was provided. Please help us by encouraging your child to read at home every day!
In Math, we are going to be talking about the concepts of capacity and weight. We are going to be weighing objects around the room to see which one is heavier. We will also be pouring water in different containers to see if they can hold the same amount of water.

This week we are going to start studying about SPACE. This week we will mainly focus on talking about the sun, moon, gravity and solar system. If you have any stories at home that can help us understand these concepts better, please send them over with your child. This is a theme that mostly kids enjoy. We are going to be studying this theme for one whole month!
Report Cards will go out this Thursday, March 19. If you would like to come in for a conference and one was not requested by a teacher, please do not hesitate to contact us to set an appointment for the afternoon of Friday, March 20.
There is no school this Friday, March 20th. The teachers will have professional development in the morning and the afternoon is going to be set for conferences.

We have talked to the students that we have started the hot season in Honduras. Please provide your child with a water bottle every day. Have them wear light clothes; they can bring a hat to protect from the sun, put sunscreen on their face and arms.

The Easter Committee met last week and is planning to have a nice celebration for the children. This celebration will take place on Friday, March 27th at Sebastian Ortez house. We will leave the school at 8:30 a.m. and come back at 2:30 p.m. For this celebration to take place we need your help. We are requesting for each child to bring 5 eggshells. The children will decorate them at the party. To do this, you simply make a hole with a needle at each end of the egg. Blow through one of the holes until all the egg white and yolk has come out. Please make sure that you clean them and have them sent to school completely dry. These eggshells should be in school by Wednesday, March 25th. If you can send more than 5 they are more than welcome. The Easter Committee is also requesting a Lps. 350.00 fee. This amount of money will be used for several things such as:
·         Snacks
·         Drinks
·         Lunch
·         Easter Basket
·         Candies
·         PiƱata
·         Hiring of an Easter Bunny (to entertain the children and for egghunt)
·         Hiring of Face Painting
·         Cups, Plates, Napkins
·         Plastic Eggs
Please send this amount of money by Wednesday March 18th since the Committee needs to buy some of the items mentioned above. Thanks for your understanding.
In Honduras we celebrate Father´s Day on March 19th. We would like to invite all of our DADDIES to have Donuts with your child on this day at 8:00 a.m. We are planning on having something nice prepared for you. We hope you can come and spend some time with your child at school.
