WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17- 21

This week we are going to be working with the letter Hh. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: hamburger, hammer, hanger, hospital, honey, hippopotamus, hose, hopscotch, helmet, helicopter, hive, hair, hay, hotdog, and hula hoops.

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Where is Baby Hippo hiding? We will help his mother find him in this hilarious hide-and-seek story that teaches the letter H.

Harry is a white dog with black spots who loves everything . . . except baths. So one day before bath time, Harry runs away. He plays outside all day long, digging and sliding in everything from garden soil to pavement tar. By the time he returns home, Harry is so dirty he looks like a black dog with white spots. His family doesn't even recognize him!

Convinced the sky is falling, Henny Penny and a band of gullible friends march off to tell the king, only to meet their end at the hands of a wily fox.

Horace Hippo has everything a hippo could want or need - well almost everything... Horace's dad is a very busy hippo, and Horace never gets to see him. So when Horace's dad promises to play with him one day, Horace waits all day and night. Finally having become fed up waiting, Horace digs a hole, covers it with grass, and traps his father as he walks out in the morning. Horace's dad takes it all with good humor and the two then spend the entire day together!

The five new sight words for this week are: me, get, day, did, and love. We are now up to 60 sight words!!! Please practice them with your child at home!!!

We are starting a mini unit about Honduran Coins this week. We will be discussing each one of them and its value. We will be sorting them out by its value. This is also a great opportunity to practice our addition and subtraction skills. We would like to request your help in sending one of each of the different coins with your child to school (in case you have them). If you would like to send in more, they will surely be welcome in our class!

The children are having an extremely great time learning about all different kinds of animals. This week our main focus will be learning about AMPHIBIANS!!! We will be discussing their characteristics, and how they are born. We will be learning about the life cycle of a frog!

To wrap up our unit on Animals, we are hosting our marvelous KINDER ZOO on February 28th.

The children were assigned to an animal. Your child should create a 3D model about this animal and have it ready to display it in our room. They should also present facts about this animal and explain what they have learned about it. We will have a big event on this day in which children from other grades, teachers, and administrators will be invited. Your child can come dressed as a scientist, zoo keeper, or even the animal represented!!! Please be creative, help your child come up with the ideas. This is a fun family project!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS so you can join the fun!!!
