November 28th -December 2nd Review Week

November 28,2016

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thank you all so very much for your donations to Angelitos del Dia! With your help and thoughtfulness we have made a  difference in the lives of others. Way to go Discovery Wolves!

Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an international organization that takes in abandoned and orphaned children, providing a home and education.

Here in Honduras, the NPH organization provides for over 500 children in at large ranch near La Venta and home in Tegucigalpa for severely handicapped children.

While many children at the ranch have aunts, uncles, or grandparents that come to visit them and can provide some Christmas gifts, some children at a ranch have no family to visit.
It is these children, whom we would like
to provide for this Christmas.  In the main office, a NPH Giving Tree will be set up. If you wish to participate, choose a paper tree that has a child’s information about his/her size for shoes and socks. Purchase the new items and return them to Mrs. Agurcia’s Room (Rm. 7) by Wednesday, December 7th,unwrapped, with the tree tag taped to it. Thank you for giving this Christmas!

If more information about NPH’s work in Honduras, please visit http://www.nph-honduras.org/

Song Fest is around the corner. We need the students to dress up in  Kahki pants, leggings. dress or shorts and a brown shirt for the presentation.  We are making the monkey visors here in school as part of our Art Class.

Date, Time and Location – Our Songfest this year will take place in MACC - on Friday, December 9 at 6:00 p.m. A map will be sent to your email with specific directions on how to get there. This day we will be releasing our students at 11: 45 a.m. so our teachers and music department can transport all the necessary instruments and do the appropriate set up for the event.
Performances and Parent Collaboration – Parents are asked to cooperate with our Song Fest in making sure their students are dressed properly for their presentations, and making sure the students are at the venue no later that 5:30 p.m. Please note the descriptions below. If any parent has a question, please contact your homeroom teacher.

We will be doing an author study this week about Kevin Henkes. If you have any books about this wonderful author please send them with your child to school. We will be reading some of his books and watching interesting videos about the way he creates his books.
Some of the books that we chose to read in class are the following:

Lilly loves everything about school, especially her cool teacher, Mr. Slinger. But when Lilly brings her purple plastic purse and its treasures to school and can't wait until sharing time, Mr. Slinger confiscates her prized possessions. Lilly's fury leads to revenge and then to remorse and she sets out to make amends.

Owen is a young mouse about to start school. Owen treats Fuzzy, his blanket, like it is his best friend. When Owen’s neighbor, Mrs. Tweezers, sees Owen playing with the blanket, she suggests ways for Owen’s parents to try to get Owen to get rid of Fuzzy before it’s time for him to start school. Owen is very upset. Everyone seems to be unhappy until Owen’s mother comes up with a solution that pleases everyone.

“There is no Jessica,” said Ruthie’s parents. But of course there was. She ate with Ruthie, played with Ruthie, and was sorry when Ruthie was bad. Nobody could see Jessica—except Ruthie. When it came time for Ruthie to go to school, Jessica went with her. Her parents hoped Ruthie would find a friend at school who would replace Jessica. They were in for a happy surprise!

This will also be a Review Week!!! We will be reviewing all the letters of the alphabet we have studied so far with the corresponding vocabulary words introduced for each letter.
We will be doing  different activities to review syllable counting, beginning and ending sounds, and rhyming words.

We are going to be evaluating the 30 sight words we have worked with in the class. Please make sure your child recognize these words by sight. Practicing at home daily will be very beneficial for your kid and helpful for us. The sight words they should know by now are: the, I, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, of, at, be, this, have, see, or, one, had, by, can. It is very important for them to recognize all the words, since we are starting to do a lot of writing and reading activities. They are all very excited to know that they are starting to write and read on their own.

In Math, we will be reviewing numbers 0-18. The children should be able to recognize these numbers out of sequence, making sets to match each number and sequence the numbers in the correct order. We will also review the concepts Top, Middle Bottom, What number comes before? What number comes after? Which is more? Which is less?

On December 1st we will decorate our Christmas tree.  If you have any  decorations or lights that you would like to share with our class please send them in. We will return all the decorations in January. Also,  if you have any books that are related to the winter holiday's (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa & Christmas) we would love to read them in class. Please send them with your child, we will be displaying them in our book corner.

Week of Nov. 14th -18 th Letter U

November 11,2016

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

In Kindergarten we learn about many things. We teach our students about sharing and helping out. Angelitos Del Dia is a perfect way to help show our kids just how easy this can be and how we can make a difference in our community.

"Angelitos del Dia" helps out newborn babies born in Materno Infantil here in Tegucigalpa. They provide moms with newborn essentials (blankets, pajamas, socks, hats, wash cloths, towels, diapers, baby wipes, baby soap and baby shampoo).

This week we are going to be working with the letter Uu. The vocabulary words that we are going to be focusing on are the following: upstairs, upside down, underwear, umpire, umbrella, and under.

Some stories that we are going to be reading this week are:

Umbrella bird is very unhappy about his unusual feather until they save the day!

Carlos walks into the cloud forest with his green umbrella, where the only sound is the steady, drip, drip, drip of drops falling from the trees.  Carlos is sure that he will see lots of animals--perhaps a toucan, a tapir, maybe the monkey, and if he is lucky, the exotic quetzal bird.  He leaves his umbrella at the foot of a giant fig tree and climbs up for a better look.  Perhaps Carlos should have stayed below, where; first a mischievous tree frog hops into the umbrella, followed by one animal after another, each one larger than the last!

The meanings of "up" are conveyed with merry verse and illustrations in a happy book that celebrates the joy of life.

In Math, we are going to be introducing number 17. The children will make sets with this number. We are also going to be constructing pictographs. Each child will have the chance to create their own graph.

 We will begin discussing adjectives.

The sight words we are going to be studying for the next couple of weeks are: one, had, by, can, or.

We will continue working on ending sounds.

This week we are going to be working with the letter Ll. The vocabulary for the week are: lollipop, lizard, lemon, light bulb, ladder, lamb, lips, lobster, library, lamp, lightning, lettuce, ladybug, lid, and log.

Some of the stories we are going to be reading this week are:

Lulu the Lamb doesn’t know when to stop laughing until Lion teaches her a lesson.

In this infectious rhyming read-aloud, Baby Llama turns bedtime into an all-out llama drama! Tucked into bed by his mama, Baby Llama immediately starts worrying when she goes downstairs, and his soft whimpers turn to hollers when she doesn't come right back. But just in time, Mama returns to set things right.

This story explores the concepts of time, size and manners through the exploits of one very grouchy ladybug. When it refuses to share aphids with another ladybug, the grouchy insect flies off to pick a fight an hour with a succession of ever-larger animals.

In Math, we are going to be introducing number 16. The children will make sets with this number. We will be graphing this week. We will be using pictographs to read and interpret the graphs. Each child will have the chance to create their own graph.

We will continue to work with the sight words introduced last week: be, can, at, see, this, have Please practice these words daily.                               Do not forget to review the past 20 sight words also.
