Week 4 August 29th - September 2nd

August 29,2016

Dear  Parents,

Last week we had a great time learning about the parts of the apple, observing ants and learning lots of new vocabulary, listening and reading many stories. Our learning journey continues this week  with the letter “Tt”.
The vocabulary for this letter is table, teeth, turtle, toaster, tongue, tears, tomato, telescope,
t-shirt, ticket, toothbrush, toothpaste, tiger, toilet, telephone and tire.

Please send in at least 1 item from home that begins with this letter. Be creative it can be another Tt word that is not on our list Send it to school on Tuesday. Monday a  Ziploc bag will go home in your child's folder. Tuesday.

We will be discussing and sharing them in class. We will also display them  so the children can observe and play with them. This helps reinforce the vocabulary. The items will be returned on Friday.
Our main focus will be learning about turtles. If you have any book, poster, video, or any other material that can be useful for us, we would really appreciate it if we can borrow it from you.

Pet turtles are also more than welcome to join our class for the week.

Here is a list of foods that begin with the letter"Tt" toast, tomatoes, tomato sauce, turkey, teddy grahams, tamales, tofu, tacos, tuna, tater tots, tilapia, tangerines, tortillas, teriyaki, tortellini, truffles, tea, toffee, tartar sauce, trout, tapioca, turnips, taquitos, twix, tiramasu
If you would like to send in a "Tt" snack please let me know. Our students would enjoy trying new things.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Tilly Turtle, Tiger, and Toad are having a terrific time at the tea party until a tiny accident occurs.

A little girl named Sophie is having tea with her mother in their kitchen. Soon they are joined for tea by a tiger who drinks all the tea, eats all the food in the house and drinks everything, even draining the water from the taps, so that Sophie cannot have her bath. Then he leaves. Sophie's father comes home and suggests that they all go out and have a lovely meal in a cafe. The following day Sophie and her mother go out to buy some more food, including a big tin of tiger food. But the tiger never returns.

The book begins with a one page explanation of what this species of sea turtles are and how they are different from tortoises and where they can be found. Then the real story begins. Where is she born? How does she survive in the vast ocean waters? Where does she travel?

As you all know we have been working with the words and, the, I, to, a. This week we are going to be adding the words in, is, you, that, it.
Please practice these words daily with your child. Your child must be able to read and recognize these words without hesitation. Sight words are words that do not always follow grammatical rules and cannot be sounded out. They are extremely important to learn because the are words that appear in every text we read. This is why they need to be practiced daily.

In September we celebrate Honduras' independence. We will begin our unit "Getting to Know Honduras".
We will learn about La Tigra National Park,

Tela and Trujillo Beach. If you have visited any of these beautiful places and have souvenirs or pictures please send them in.

This week we are going to introduce the concept of syllables. One of the easiest ways to help children realize that words are made up of several sounds and syllables is to allow them to “break up” words by clapping out their syllables.

In Math, we are going to be reviewing various concepts from numbers 0-10. Some of these concepts are more, less, sequencing, making sets, same, different, etc.

  • Please remember to check your child's folder on a daily basis.
  • Monday and Wednesday homework will be sent home.
  • Friday your child's weekly evaluations will be sent home.

  • Please look them over and sign the sheet. Return it on Monday.

  • Seesaw is an electronic portfolio that Kindergarten will be using this year. You will receive an invitation, then proceed to download it to your phone. You will be the only person who can view your child's portfolio. I will be uploading pictures of the things we do here in class. It is a wonderful tool to have and the children love seeing pictures of themselves in action!
