WEEK OF FEBRUARY 8-12, 2016

This week we are going to be working with the letter Ff. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: fan, fish, forest, flower, frog, french toast, fruit, french fries, fox, flag, flashlight, fire, farm, football, and family.

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Fifi's flute has fallen in the river. Will it float away forever?

One day, a fox saw a crow with a piece of meat in his beak. The fox was very hungry and thought, “How can I get the piece of cheese?”
He thought for a while. Soon, an idea struck him. Ask your child what happened!!!

While the other field mice work to gather grain and nuts for winter, Frederick sits on a sunny rock by himself. “I gather sun rays for the cold dark winter days,” he tells them. Another day he gathers “colors,” and then “words.” And when the food runs out, it is Frederick, the dreamer and poet, whose endless store of supplies warms the hearts of his fellow mice, and feeds their spirits during the darkest winter days.

Two best friends, a minnow and a tadpole, are practically inseparable until the tadpole grows legs and decides to explore the world beyond the pond. When the tadpole, now a frog, returns to tell his friend of the extraordinary things he’s seen, the minnow, now a fish, tries to follow in his footsteps, but quickly finds that land is not what he expected.

We will continue working with the sight words that were introduced last week: if, what, her, has, all.
Please take 15 minutes every day to practice them at home with your child. It is very important for all of them to recognize all the sight words we have covered in class so far. Once they can recognize sight words, it is going to be a lot easier for them to read books. The following link is a nice and fun game to practice these words.

In Math, we are going to continue working on a unit about Measurement. The children will have fun measuring things around the room using different kinds of items. We will use items from the class such as unifix cubes, links, blocks, etc. You may want to do some measurement activities with your child at home. At this time, they will use non-standard units of measurement and not the rulers that we normally use to measure things. This week our main focus will be weight. We will be using balances!!!

The children are having an extremely great time learning about all different kinds of animals. This week our main focus will be learning about MAMMALS!!! We will be discussing their characteristics, the way they breathe, and how they are born. We are also going to talk about animals that live under the ocean that belong to this group.

This Friday, we will celebrate Valentine´s Day. We will be having lunch altogether to celebrate this special day. We will be talking about ways to be nice to each other and we will be discussing Friendship. Please send Lps. 150.00 by Wednesday to order the lunch, drinks, dessert, and a small treat for every child.
We are going to do a gift exchange this day also. For this, please send a BOOK wrapped with your child by Thursday, February 11th. Try to avoid books about princesses or super heroes since you do not know if your child will be given the book to a boy or a girl. It would be great if these books can be Leveled 1 Readers for the children to read on their own. On Friday the children will take out a paper from a basket to find out who his/her secret friend is!!!
There will be NO Kinder Kafe this week!

As Valentine´s Day is around the corner, we are requesting you to help your child decorate a shoe box to be used as their mailbox. Be creative, and let your child brainstorm the ideas that he/she would like their box to look like. We are going to display all these lovely mailboxes on Friday for your child to deliver their valentine cards for their friends. This is a voluntary activity. However, if you decide to participate, the only request that we have is that the students should bring one card or treat to each one of the Kindergarten students. This mailbox should be in school this Thursday, February 11th.
We have a total of 12 students! Here is the list….

The children will be assign to an animal this week. Your child should create a 3D model about this animal and have it ready to display it in our room. They should also present facts about this animal and explain what they have learned about it. We will have a big event on this day in which children from other grades, teachers, and administrators will be invited. Your child can come dressed as a scientist, zoo keeper, or even the animal represented!!! Please be creative, help your child come up with the ideas. This is a fun family project and we would love to wrap up our unit on animals with this fun activity!!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS so you can join the fun!!!
