Week of Nov. 10 - 14

Dear Parents,
This week we are going to be working with the letter Ll. The vocabulary words that we are going to be focusing on are the following: lollipop, lizard, lemon, light bulb, ladder, lamb, lips, lobster, library, lamp, lightning, lettuce, ladybug, lid, and log.

Some of the stories we are going to be reading this week are:

Lulu the Lamb doesn’t know when to stop laughing until Lion teaches her a lesson.

This story explores the concepts of time, size and manners through the exploits of one very grouchy ladybug. When it refuses to share aphids with another ladybug, the grouchy insect flies off to pick a fight an hour with a succession of ever-larger animals.

Sid is a seed who is quite at home, living in his little underground world. He has two living companions, a spider and a caterpillar, which are making plans to become something great. Slowly his friends leave on their exciting journeys, leaving Sid by himself, longing for his own life changing event.
In Math, we are going to be introducing number 17. The children will make sets with this number. We are also going to be constructing pictographs. Each child will have the chance to create their own graph.

Please practice the following skills:
Numbers and counting up to 10
C.14 Count forward and backward– up to 10
Data and graphs

We will continue to work with the sight words introduced last week: by, can, or, one, had. Click on the following link to find a great game you may want to try with your child at home. http://www.starfall.com/n/matching/sight-words/play.htm?f

In Science, we are going to be introducing the unit of PLANTS. This week we are going to be studying the parts of the plant. We are going to be discussing the ways to take care of the plants. If you have anything that can help us with this unit, we would really appreciate it if you can let us borrow it.

We would like to give a big Thank You to Emma Rápalo and Ethan Paredes for donating the ingredients last week. The children enjoyed making a rainbow out of froot loops and marshmallows. The children in charge for donating the ingredients for Kindergarten Kafe this Friday are Felipe Funez and Lucia Torres. Thanks in advance.
We would like to remind you that our school has been invited to participate in an Athletic friendly-competition. This event will take place on November 19th, 20th, and 21st from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Villa Olimpica.

For this activity we are requesting your help with a fee of 350 lempiras. This money is for buying a short and a t-shirt with the name and logo of the school. Please send this money no later than November 12th. Thanks in advance.

MIDTERM – This Friday, November 14 marks the midpoint of the second quarter. Midterm Progress reports will be sent home next Friday, November 21.

DPTO BINGO – The DPTO wishes to invite everyone in our community to their FALL BINGO, which will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21. The bingo card has a cost of L100, with the possibility to win very attractive prizes while having a wonderful evening with your family and friends. Pupusas, tacos, hot dogs and pizzas plus drinks and desserts will be sold, and a room will be available for the little ones to watch movies and be in the “night care”. Please support the DPTO by attending and bringing your relatives and friends.

FUNDACION ABRIGO – Once again, Discovery School support Fundacion Abrigo in their mission to lodge families from the rural areas who come to Hospital Escuela. WE are asking our school families to send 1 gallon of in the disinfectant per family, and to send it in by Friday, November 21. What a wonderful way to show our gratitude for what we have – to share what we have with those in need!

SCHOOL CAFETERIA – Ms. Sheyla McCaul wants to remind parents to visit the cafeteria’s bloghttp://wolvescafeteria.blogspot.com/ to check out the delicious and nutritious menu that is available for our students (and parents!). The cafeteria will be offering a spectacular Thanksgiving menu for the classroom Thanksgiving celebrations, and for families to enjoy at home.
