WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24-27

This week we are going to be working with the letter Zz. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: zebra, zig-zag, zipper, zoo, zookeeper,

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

What will it take for Zack to wake up? We will find out in this zippy tale that teaches the letter Z.

Spot, a polka-dot leopard who can change colors and even juggle his own spots, tries to convince two children that he is special enough to be exhibited in the zoo.

This absolutely stunning picture book is all about Za-za and the effect that the new baby has on a household. When Za-za, the little zebra gets a baby brother, the usual routines in her life change radically. Mom returns from hospital, and she's tired, and Za-za is looked after by Granny. The baby receives all the attention from both her parents as well as visitors and Za-za is feeling neglected. Everyone is so busy that there is no time for toys or stories. So how does it all turn out for Za-za?

We will continue working with the sight words: me, get, day, did, and love. We are now up to 60 sight words!!! Please practice them with your child at home!!!

We are going to work with Word Families. These are words that have the same kind of word ending and a changeable first letter. For instance, the "at" word family would include words like cat, pat, rat, tat, hat, etc. Words in a family will always rhyme; however, not all rhyming words belong to the same word family. "Hair" and "care" both rhyme, but come from different families. You may want to try the following link for an online game to play with your child.

In Math, we are going to review addition and subtraction to and from 10. It would be a great help for your children to practice the following IXL skills:

Addition

I.7     Add two numbers - sums up to 10

I.8     Addition sentences - sums up to 10

I.9     Ways to make a number - sums up to 10

Subtraction

J.6     Subtraction - numbers up to 9

They should also present facts about this animal and explain what they have learned about it. We will have a big event on this day in which children from other grades, teachers, and administrators will be invited. Your child can come dressed as a scientist, zoo keeper, or even the animal represented!!! Please be creative, help your child come up with the ideas. This is a fun family project!! He plays outside all day long, digging and sliding in everything from garden soil to pavement tar. By the time he returns home, Harry is so dirty he looks like a black dog with white spots. His family doesn't even recognize him!

Convinced the sky is falling, Henny Penny and a band of gullible friends march off to tell the king, only to meet their end at the hands of a wily fox.

Horace Hippo has everything a hippo could want or need - well almost everything... Horace's dad is a very busy hippo, and Horace never gets to see him. So when Horace's dad promises to play with him one day, Horace waits all day and night. Clip It! Behavior Chart

Our classroom will use a clip chart to monitor behavior. A clip chart is a great tool that allows students to be rewarded for positive behavior, while discouraging negative behavior.

Each student has a clothespin, or clip, with his or her name on it. Everyone will start on green at the beginning of each day, and clips can be moved up and down throughout the day based on behavior.

The Super Student level is reserved for outstanding behavior. A student who reaches this level will earn a special note home, and a jewel on his/her clip. After five jewels, clips will be retired to the Hall of Fame and a new clip will be given!

Students can move to the Great Job level for continuing to display good behavior. You should be very proud of your child for reaching this level!

Students will move to the Good Choices level for showing that they are making the right behavior decisions! Ending the day on this level is great!

Every student will start the day on the Ready to Learn level. As the day goes on, clips can be moved up and down, based on behavior. This level is a good one to be on!

A student will be moved to the Think About It level as a warning about his/her behavior, and a reminder to follow the rules.

Students who continue to display poor behavior can move down to the Teacher’s Choice level. Here, the teacher can decide what action to take. Loss of recess or center time might be an appropriate choice.

When a student moves to the Parent Contact level, the teacher will notify parents via note or phone call. A visit to the Principal’s office might also be in order. Students on this level may also lose recess time, etc.

CANDIDATE FOR HEAD OF SCHOOL VISIT – We would like to remind our parents that Mr. Robert Gronniger will be visiting our school as a candidate for the Head of School Position. Mr. Gronniger will be on site this Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11. There will be a Q&A Session for Parents on Tuesday, February 11, from 8:00 to 10:00 am in the school library. We encourage our parents to attend this session and seize the opportunity to ask questions to this candidate.

MIDTERM AND MAP REPORTS – The Midterm for the third quarter was last Friday, February 7. Midterm Reports and MAP reports will be sent out this Friday, Febrary 14. Please review them and return them signed by Tuesday, February 18.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3-7

 Dear Parents,

This week we are going to be working with the letter Ee. The vocabulary that we are going to be focusing on is the following: elevator, egg, envelope, elephant, elbow, escalator, exit, eggplant, and empty.

If you have any items at home that begin with this letter, send them over with your child and we will be discussing them in class, we will display them on a table and we will return them back on Friday. The kids get excited to bring things from home.

Some of the stories that we will be reading this week are:

Let Elvin the Elephant entertain you. You'll be amazed at everything Elvin can do! This engaging rhyming tale teaches the letter E.

Elmer is an elephant who has a colorful body, with yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue, green, black and white arranged as a patchwork. He has a cheerful and optimistic personality, and he loves practical jokes.

It's an extraordinary day on Pebble Island for three frogs when one of them discovers a beautiful white egg. They've never seen a chicken egg before, but they're sure that's what this must be. So when the egg hatches and out crawls a long green, scaly creature, they naturally call it . . . a chicken!

Our new sight words for this week are: boy, two, no, girl, and has. Please practice these words at home with your child.

It is important for students to learn sight words in order to help them become fluent readers. Remember that sight words are words students are able to read upon “sight” without having to sound them out. They help facilitate reading comprehension giving students a better opportunity to understand other words in context as they read.

We will continue measuring things around the room using the items your child brought last week in a paper bag. We will be returning these items on Friday. We will also continue adding to 10 and subtracting from 10. The children are becoming bolder each day and are very excited about it.

The children are having an extremely great time learning about all different kinds of animals. This week our main focus will be learning about MAMMALS!!! We will be discussing their characteristics, the way they breathe, and how they are born. We are also going to talk about animals that live under the ocean that belong to this group.

The children in charge of donating the materials for Kindergarten Kafe are: Maya Miller and Mia Ortiz. Thank you in advance!!!

On Monday, February 3rd one of our Kindergarten students will be celebrating its birthday. You do not need to pack lunch for your children on this day. Pizza and cake will be provided!!!

We would like to give a very warmth welcome to our Kindergarten World to our new friend Lorenzo Aguilera!!! He is coming all the way from Colombia and is joining our Kinder A.

In the month of February, we celebrate friendship. We will be discussing ways to be a good friend. The lower elementary children will all be wearing a bracelet this whole month to school to indicate that we are all good friends and the importance of it. To make this possible, we are requesting Lps. 20.00 to buy our friendship bracelets. Please send this money no later than Thursday, February 6th. Make sure your child wears this bracelet daily.

As Valentine´s Day is around the corner, we are requesting you to help your child decorate a shoe box to be used as their mailbox. Be creative, and let your child brainstorm the ideas that he/she would like their box to look like. This mailbox should be in school this Friday, February 7th.
