WEEK OF OCTOBER 28-NOVEMBER 1

Dear Parents,

This week we are going to be working with the letter Cc. The vocabulary words we are going to be focusing on are: cage, cucumber, camel, camera, candle, cap, carrots, clock, clown, cup, comb, corn, cafeteria, coins, and cousins.

In our phonemic awareness we are going to start studying Ending Consonants. By this, we mean the ending consonant they hear in words such as bat, dog, paper, and pencil. We are NOT focusing on ending sounds like house, mice, and candle.

In Math we are going to work with number 16 and with the concepts of top, middle, bottom. The children will make sets with this number and sequence numbers from 0 to 16.

In Science, we will continue working with FOOD. Last week we talked about food they eat during breakfast, lunch and dinner. This week we are going to focus on the Food Pyramid and what does each category mean. The students will get the chance to do a Food Pyramid with cutouts from magazines, newspaper, supermarket brochures, etc. If you have any food pictures that we can use, we would greatly appreciate you sending them to school. We will talk about the difference between healthy food and junk food.

On Wednesday we are celebrating UN Day. For this reason, your child does not need to bring snack on this day. We would also like to remind you that there is an early dismissal on this day. Children are dismissed from school at 11:45 a.m.

On Thursday we are celebrating Book Character Day. Your child can come to school with a costume that they can wear all day long. Please avoid costumes that will make it difficult for your child to run, sweat a lot or that can be hard for them to go to the bathroom. If you wish you can send extra clothes in their backpack for them to change whenever they want to. We are going to go trick-or-treating around the school. For this we need your help. We are going to be assigning you with one treat to send for the children. Also, the book character committee has decided to provide a snack and lunch for all the students. Therefore, on this day you do NOT need to send a lunchbox with your child to school.Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be hosting a live wax museum of book characters during the second period.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Read with fun in your voice.

Read to your child with humor and expression. Use different voices for different characters. Ham it up!

GAME OF THE WEEK:

What you'll need

·         Small cardboard box (such as a shoe box)

·         Scissors

·         Marker

·         5 marbles for each player

How to play

1.     Turn the box so its open side is on the bottom and cut 5 evenly spaced notches (ours were 1-1/4 inches wide) along one long side. Number the holes as shown.

2.    Set the box on the floor and choose a starting line, anywhere from 3 to 6 feet away, depending on the ages of the contestants.

3.    To play, give each player 5 marbles and have them take turns trying to shoot them into the holes. Players earn the point values of the holes their marbles enter, and the player with the highest score after everyone has their turn wins.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 21-25

Dear Parents,

This is going to be a short week for us. We decided to have an Author Study about Eric Carle. If you have any books about this wonderful author please send them with your child to school. We will be reading some of his books and watching interesting videos about the way he creates his books.

Some of the books that we chose to read in class are the following:

Poor Hermit Crab! He's outgrown his snug little shell, so he finds himself a larger one -- and many new friends to decorate and protect his new house. But what will happen when he outgrows this shell, and has to say good-bye to all the sea creatures that have made Hermit Crab's house a home? Children will also learn a lot about the fascinating world of marine life along the way.

The barnyard rooster crows and Jack wakes up -- hungry, of course! What does he want for breakfast? A big pancake! But first, Jack's mother needs flour from the mill, an egg from the black hen, milk from the spotted cow, butter churned from fresh cream, and firewood for the stove. Will Jack ever get his pancake?

This is a wonderful book to rewrite emphasizing phonemic awareness. Something that you can do at home is that for each day of the week, have your child list foods that begin with the same letter as that particular day: Monday, meatballs, macaroni, mashed potatoes; Tuesday, tacos, tomatoes, tuna; etc.

An artist is asked by an unseen friend to draw a star. The star then asks the artist to draw the sun. The sun asks for a tree, and before long an entire universe has sprung up. Night falls, the moon rises, the moon asks for a star, and the circle is complete. The children will get the chance to decorate their own stars.

We are going to continue with the vocabulary words that were introduced last week. These words are: omelet, onion, olive, ostrich, ox, octagon, octopus, orange, obstacle, oil, orquestra, oval, and oatmeal.

Sight Words: These sight words were also introduced last week and we will be working on them this week as well. Please practice these words at home with your child. be, this, at, from, have.

In Math, we are going to be working with number 15 and continue our study with Ordinal Numbers.

In Science we will begin a unit about Food. We are going to be discussing healthy and unhealthy snacks. We are also going to introduce them the Food Pyramid and talk about each type of food. Children will get the chance to name food that is eaten during the breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you any books or posters, or any other material that you would like to share with us it would be greatly appreciated.

This Friday we are having Parent-Teacher Conferences. You will be getting a note in your child´s folder stating the time that we have assigned each one of you. Please return this note signed on Wednesday. If you are unable to attend at the time that has been assigned for you let us know and we will work it out at a different time.

Book Character Day is around the corner. We are going to be having a celebration on Thursday, October 31st. We only have one mother that signed up for this activity. If we have any other volunteer please let us know so we can get together and meet as soon as possible to plan this celebration for the children. They are all very excited about this day and we would like to have something nice prepared for them.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Write it down

Have paper and pencils available for your child to use for writing. Work together; write a sentence or two about something special. Encourage her to use the letters and sounds she's learning about in school.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Constellation Collaboration

What you'll need

·         Star stickers

·         Paper

·         White marker or chalk

How to play

1.     Each player starts by randomly placing a number of star stickers onto a piece of paper.

2.    Players then swap their starred papers with one another and, on their new paper, draw lines between the stars to make an image. (We used a white marker.)

3.    When everyone has finished drawing, players take turns describing their new constellation.

REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES – We will be issuing the report cards for the first quarter this Friday, October 25. Please make sure that you are planning to attend the meetings with your child’s teachers to discuss the academic progress in the first quarter.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 15-18, 2013

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a fantastic weekend. This week we will be working with the letter Oo. Some of the stories that we will be reading are the following:

Olive the Octopus wants to be a juggler!

Bright cut-paper collages bring a traditional counting rhyme to new life, allowing young readers to take a tour of nature as they learn to count from one to ten.

In this beautifully illustrated picture book, a young girl and her father go owling on a wintry night in the woods.

In our Phonemic Awareness we are going to be doing Alliteration activities with the kids. What is alliteration? Alliteration is the use of the same consonant sounds in words that are near each other. It is the sound, not the letter that is important: therefore ‘candy’ and ‘Cindy’ do not alliterate, but ‘cool’ and ‘kids’ do. It is a great exercise to help our kids learn phonetic alphabet awareness and develop concentration and memory skills. For example:

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Sally swam silently in the sea.

The children will get the chance to do their own alliteration using their name!!!

In Math we are going to be working with number 14 and we are going to introduce the concept of Ordinal Positions. We will play games using the words first, second, third, fourth, and fifth.

In Science we are going to be talking about The Five Senses! We will be reading the book My Five Senses by Aliki. If you have any book that talks about our senses, please let us borrow them from you!

We are going to study opposites. Have your child look around your house for opposites!

Last week the kids enjoyed making the Life Cycle of a Butterfly with marshmallows, gummy worms, pretzels and chocolate. Thank you for bringing the ingredients to Milla Alvarez and Mia Ortiz. This week Nora Paige Herrera and Ellyn Maria Jenks will be in charge of donating the ingredients we will be using. Thanks in advance.

Show and Tell Time

Since the children really enjoy sharing their toys with their friends at school. We have decided that from now on, we will have show and tell every Friday. Please help your child make a wise decision on what to bring to school. Avoid big and noisy toys.

Tip of the Week Play with puppets

Play language games with puppets. Have the puppet say, "My name is Mark. I like words that rhyme with my name. Does park rhyme with Mark? Does ball rhyme with Mark?"

Game of the Week: SHADOW PLAY

Have your child try to:

·        hide from his own shadow

·        shake hands with someone else's shadow without actually touching hands

·        touch someone else's shadow with his own

·        make his shadow do things he can't, such as touch the top of a tree or building

·        fit his shadow inside someone else's

·        turn his shadow into letter shapes

DONATIONS NEEDED:  Don’t forget to send in cereal boxes for “Ya Tengo Donde Escribir” between now and November 20. The grade that brought the most boxes will be awarded a pizza party or ice cream party! Please help us help those in need!

October 6, 2013

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7-11

Dear Parents,

This will be a Review Week!!! We will be reviewing all the letters of the alphabet we have studied so far with the corresponding vocabulary words introduced for each letter.

We will be doing a sort of different activities to review syllable counting, beginning sounds and rhyming words.

We are going to be evaluating the 20 sight words we have worked with in the class. Please make sure your child recognize these words by sight. Practicing at home daily will be very beneficial for your kid and helpful for us. The sight words they should know by now are: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I.

In Math, we will be reviewing numbers 0-13. The children should be able to recognize these numbers out of sequence, making sets to match each number and sequence the numbers in the correct order. We will be reviewing pictographs and counting backwards from 10.

In Science, we are going to continue to talk about My Body. This week we will focus on our internal organs. We will be talking about heart, lungs, liver, stomach, intestines, kidney, skeleton, veins and muscles.

We will study the life Cycle of a Butterfly. We will be doing a unit with the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The students will be retelling the story with cards, acting it out with stick puppets, and making arts and crafts that go along with the story. If you have any stories that talk about butterflies, please let us borrow them from you. The vocabulary we will be discussing is egg, caterpillar, cocoon, buttefly, and cycle.

We are going to be talking about Cristopher Colombus. If you have any story books that you are willing to share with the us please send them with you child and we will be reading them in the class.

A special thank you goes to Luciana Nuñez and Maya Miller for bringing the ingredients for Kinder Kafe last week. The children enjoyed doing a bear out of bread, peanut butter, bananas and raisins. This week Milla Natalya Alvarez and Mia Isabella Ortiz will be in charge of donating the materials.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

How to Play:

1. Write target words onto slips of paper or post-it notes and tape onto bowling pins with clear tape. (If you do not have bowling pins, plastic bottles work perfectly for this). Put 4 words on each pin so that there is always a word visible when the pin falls down.

2. Set up pins as you normally would for bowling.

3. Let child throw bowling ball to knock pins down.

4. Before picking bowling again (or setting up the pins for the next round), the child must read each word that is visible on the pins that were knocked down.

5. Repeat as long as child is interested and wants to play.

* You can spice this up by using different things as your bowling ball - sponges, toys.*

Other ways to play - you can easily adapt this to review letters, letter sounds, math facts and more.

MAP FALL TESTING SESSION – This is the third week of our Map testing session.  Kinder A will take it at 11:40 a.m. on Friday, October 11. Kinder B will take it Monday, October 7, at 11:40 a.m. Please try not to miss school this day!

NO ELECTRICITY ON TUESDAYThe ENEE has published that there will be no electricity in our school on Tuesday, October 8. We encourage parents to pack snack and lunch for students that does NOT require refrigeration or heating.

DONATIONS NEEDED:Ya Tengo Donde Escribir” is an organization aiming to help children from public schools that cannot afford notebooks. In order to help, the organization makes notebooks out of cereal boxes and pages from used notebooks. They are now collecting cereal boxes until November 20, and we encourage our students and teachers to bring cereal boxes from their homes. At the end of the contest, the grade that brought the most boxes will be awarded a pizza party or ice cream party! Please help us help those in need!
