WEEK OF APRIL 29 – MAY 3, 2013





Dear Parents:We finished with the study of all the letters of the alphabet. We are going to review all the letter sounds and we are going to do a lot of beginning sound activities. We are also going to emphasize with the ending sounds. We are going to read and write CVC words.



Vocabulary: Review all vocabulary from A to E.

Math: word problems(subtraction),subtraction and review venn diagram.
In IXL, your child would benefit from practicing the following skills; J.5 Subtract with pictures - numbers up to 10
J.6 Subtraction - numbers up to 9
J.7 Subtraction sentences - numbers up to 10
N.5 Venn diagrams

science: zoo animals, farm animals and pets.

Reading: characters and setting. Review Title, author and illustrator
Read for at least 10 minutes and fill out the reading log.

Sight words:some, when, would, make, there

Mid Term Reports will be sent home this Friday, May 3rd. If you would like a conference and one has not been called for, please contact the teacher as soon as you can.

There is no school on Wednesday, May 1st.We hope to see on at the Discovery Bingo Day, Saturday, May 4th! Lunch will be sold starting at 11:00 am. The game starts at 1:30 p.m.

WEEK OF APRIL 22 – 26, 2013


Dear Parents,


Thank you for your collaboration during the Mini Olympics, we truly appreciate your support.

Time is flying by really fast. This week we will be covering the letter Zz. We are going to be doing a unit about Zoo Animals. The children are going to be able to identify animals that live in the zoo, animals that we can have as pets, and animals that live in the farm.

Vocabulary: zebra, zipper, zoo, zero, zig-zag.

Sight words:some, when, would, make, there

math: word problems, number line.



Wow, this week we will be done with all the letters of the alphabet. This means that we will expose the children to a lot of reading and writing activities.
The end of the school year is always a busy time! Please mark your calendars with all the special activities that are going on in school.

This week we want to thank in advance  Fiorella Alvarado who will be in charge of bringing the cooking ingredients for this week.

PARENTS PLEASE TAKE NOTE - there will be no school for students on Wednesday, April 24. Ms. Judi Fenton, Educational Consultant, is with us this week to review our curriculum and discuss the Common Core that has been adopted by 46 states in the US, including how it might be adapted for Discovery. As part of the process, Ms. Fenton will work with the entire faculty together on Wednesday.





BINGO returns to Discovery! - Proceeds to buy TECHNOLOGY for the school. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 4! Lunch will be sold for all attending families, friends and guests starting at 11:00 a.m. and the grand BINGO will begin at 1:30 p.m.PARENT COLLABORATION IS NEEDED in donating prizes for this event. TICKETS: The school will send home a closed envelope with 5 numbered tickets that we are asking each family to sell for Lps. 150 each. You will then need to send back the envelope with the money to the school, addressed to Ms. Carolina or Ms. Gloria. The school will keep a record of each family’s payment. Make sure you contact the school (2221-7790 or gpalacios@discoveryschool.edu.hn) if you are sending the envelope with your child, especially if he/she is very young, so we can follow up on the envelope. On the day of the event, you will find the TICKET TABLE, where you will be able to turn in the stubs and collect your Bingo Cards. You may also buy more tickets if needed. Don’t miss this opportunity to collaborate with the school and spend a wonderful afternoon with your family.

WEEK OF APRIL 15 – 19, 2013


Dear Parents,


Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful long weekend and were able to get enough rest, or at least spend some enjoyable time with your children.
This week we will review by  doing a lot of activities regarding all the letters of the alphabet name and sound, sight words from 1 to 50, vocabulary words, ending and beginnig sounds, blending, and all the vowels, addition to 20 and subtraction to 10. 

This week we will be going to La Villa Olímpica to participate in the Invitational Athletic Competition.

We will be spending three days at the center; Tuesday April 16th, Wednesday April 17th, and Thursday April 18th.The event starts at 8:30am. Parents are welcome to join us and have fun at the competition. Students will leave school at 8:00 am sharp with their homeroom teacher. The t-shirts will be given to the students once they get to the event.

Students need to take a water bottle, use sun block, bring a snack and wear tennis shoes and blue shorts all three days.

Just a reminder that the annual Fun Run is this weekend, Saturday, April 20th! Along with the run there will be fun activities for your child, like basketball, volleyball and 'The Greek Games' which will be run by the 5th Graders. The morning will then end with a delicious pancake breakfast! All the proceeds will be going towards technology for the school. We hope to see you there!
This Friday, April 19th, the school will be selling minutas during lunch and after school. The cost is 25lemps.

The annual Discovery BINGO fund raiser will be held Saturday, May 4th. There will be lunch sold starting at 11:00 am and the big game will start at 1:30 pm. All processed will be put towards technology. Please read the school's Monday Memo for more information.
If you forgot to order your child'd picture you may still do so by picking up a form from Ms. Carolina, our receptionist, or printing out the from the Monday Memo.
Last, the Discovery summer camp starts June 9th. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please pick up a from from Ms. Carolina or print one from the Monday Memo and return it to Ms. Carolina. For more information, please read the Monday Memo.

WEEK OF APRIL 8 – 12, 2013



Dear Parents,
This week we are going to introduce the letter Yy. We are almost done studying all the letters of the alphabet and the children are very excited to know that they are almost in First Grade.
Vocabulary-  yarn, yo-yo, year, yogurt, yawn, yard.
sight words-am, two, my, no, so
phonemic awareness-Recognize and produce rhyming words.
science-animal concepts (animals need food, water, shelter


This is Earth awareness month so we will be discussing how to save our natural resources and planet Earth. Feel free to send any books or information you might have that we could share with the children. We thank you for your help in advance




This week we want to thank in advance  Effe Batuar who will be in charge of bringing the cooking ingredients for this week.

Please remember to send the money for the t-shirt that the students will wear on the athletic event on the 16th, 17th and 18th at the Villa Olimpica.
 
The school is currently organizing three important upcoming events. The DPTO RUN RUN AND OLYMPIC GAMES and a school BINGO are being put together to raise funds towards buying TECHNOLOGY for the school The DPTO is also organizing their annual GARAGE SALE. WEEK OF APRIL 1 – 5, 2013



Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Easter Break and were able to get enough rest, or at least spend some enjoyable time with your children. This week we will study letter Xx.
Vocabulary- ax, fox, box, six, mix, xylophone, x-rays

Phonemic awareness-beginning and ending sounds (review)

This week we will talk about extinct animals or animals in danger of extinction and water cycle.We are almost done with the alphabet and the children are excited to know that they are almost in First Grade.

The DPTO will begin to plan the school’s annual FUN RUN, and is inviting parents to a planning meeting this Thursday, April 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.
