We hope you had a long restful weekend. We would like to thank the parents who helped last Thursday with the wonderful Valentine’s Day Celebration. The committee was very kind to share cupcakes, drinks, chicken and mashed potatoes with all the children. They were all very happy. Thank you for the Valentine’s Day treats you sent for our students to share. They were all very happy to put inside their mailboxes something special from their friends.

Midterm progress reports were sent home last Thursday, February 14. Remember to sign them and have your children bring them back to school on Tuesday, February 19.

Kindergarten Parents are all invited to come to the school library on Wednesday, February 20th at 2:00 p.m. for a presentation about the MAP Assessment tool that was administered for the Kindergarten students for the first time. It is very important for your presence in this meeting since it is your chance to know a little bit more about this assessment and to ask the questions that you may have. If you are unable to attend this meeting, Ms. Giles is requesting an email from you. You can email her at debgilespk@yahoo.com

Week of February 11th - February 15th, 2013

This week we will be starting a unit about The Five Senses. This unit will explain each of the five senses in detail and give children a chance to explore their knowledge using their five senses.  They will be using their eyes, hands, ears, nose, and mouth to gain knowledge of the world around them.

Some of the vocabulary words that we will be focusing on this week is the following: smell, hear, taste, touch, see, tongue, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, explore, and senses.

We will be doing a small unit about Friendship and talk about what being a good friend is. We will connect this unit with the upcoming Valentine’s Day. During this week we will be discussing ways to be nice to each other.

If you have any stories that talk about The Five Senses or Friendship we would really appreciate if we can borrow them from you.

The Valentine’s Committee has decided to provide a snack and lunch for all the children on Thursday, February 14th. They have also decided to do a “Gift Exchange” among the children on this day. Each child should bring a Dr. Seuss Book wrapped as a gift. Each student will take out a paper with a student’s name written on it and then will give the book he/she brought as a gift.

Also, each student can bring a small detail such as a greeting card, pencil, eraser, cookie, lollipop, etc. to all his/her classmates on Thursday, February 14th. Each student will have his/her own mailbox where they will be able to place whatever they decide to bring. This activity is optional, however, if your child decides to participate, the only request we have is that they should bring a little something for ALL his/her classmates. We will be sending home the list of students in case you do not have it with you.

This Thursday we will be issuing our MIDTERM REPORTS for the third quarter. If you would like a conference, and one has not been requested, please do not hesitate to contact us.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FRIDAY AND MONDAY ARE HOLIDAYS!

Week of February 4th - February 8th, 2013

This week we will continue to work with word families. We will be focusing on the –at, -an, and –og family. We will be singing songs, and playing different kinds of games to make up words with these word families.
Children first learn to read the Word Family and then they learn to blend consonants to the beginning of each Word Family/Word Ending.  By learning to read each Word Family one at a time children learn to recognize various Word Family Endings and they learn to brake unknown words into parts in order to decode unfamiliar words in text.

This week we will begin to study the parts of our body. We are going to be learning about some of our internal body organs  and their function such as the heart, brain, lungs, and liver. Some of our vocabulary words will also include head, shoulders, knees, toes, eyes, ears, mouth, nose, elbow, legs, and arms.

Some of the books we are going to be reading this week are the following:

For the next couple of weeks we are going to be focusing on the following Fry Words:
but, not, what, all, we
Please practice these words daily at home with your children. One fun game that you may want to try at home is the following:
Concentration Game: Sight word concentration cards can easily be made using index cards. Simply write each word on two cards, shuffle and lay face down to play.
