Week of November 26th - November 30th 2012

We hope you all had a restful and wonderful thanksgiving break!
We would like to thank all the parents for the wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon last Wednesday!! Thank you, thank you!!! This would not have been possible without your help! The Thanksgiving Committee did an outstanding job!!

This week we are going to start working with the letter Mm. We are going to be exploring Magnets and predicting which objects around the classroom are attracted to magnets. It is going to be a lot of fun for the children!!!

We are going to continue working with addition problems up to 10. Last week we used lollipops as counters. This week we are going to be using M & M’s to do a graph. Math is filled with fun activities in our Kindergarten Class.

Midterm Reports were sent home last Wednesday. Please make sure you sign and return them as soon as possible. If a conference was requested we ask that you call and plan to come in this week. If one was not requested but you would like to come in and talk, please call us.

The school is organizing the traditional Christmas Baskets for the Support Personnel. The kindergarteners have been asked to contribute by bringing one 5lb-bag of RICE, and any other non-perishable item (i.e. canned goods, cookies, etc) you may want to donate. Please send these in before Friday, December 14.

The NPH Giving Tree is located in the Secondary Building. If you want to be a part of this wonderful initiative to provide the children of the orphanage with shoes and socks, tags on the tree have the children's size information. For more information talk to Mrs. Christina Agurcia.

Songfest in around the corner! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 18th. The presentation will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. (children need to be back in school by 5:30 p.m.). Our Kindergarten students will be singing: “Somewhere Out There” from “Fievel,” an American Tale. Students need to wear mouse ears, a tail and come dressed with pijamas. They also need to bring a small pillow for the show.

This Wednesday is an early dismissal. Children will leave school at 11:45 a.m.

This week the child in charge of Kindergarten Kafe is Isabel Gonzalez

Week of November 19th - November 23rd 2012

This is a very short and busy week in our Kindergarten Class. We are going to be doing a lot of activities related to Thanksgiving. We are going to be talking about the meaning of this important celebration. The children are going to be rehearsing a song and at the same time they are going to be the authors and illustrators of a book about things they feel thankful for.

We want to remind you that you are all invited to our Thanksgiving lunch. It is going to take place on Wednesday, November 21st at 11:45 a.m. We understand that your time is valuable and that some of you need to return to your jobs. For this reason, we would like to emphasize that the celebration will start at the time stated above. It would be sad for you to miss your child performing, so please plan accordingly taking into consideration the traffic so that you can be in school right on time to start with the program.

We would like to extend a HUGE Thank you to Mrs. Carla Reyes and Deborah Sheenan for all their time and effort of organizing this celebration.

It is hard to believe we are at the middle of the second quarter! Mid Term Progress Reports for the second quarter will be sent home this Wednesday. Please go over them carefully, and if you would like a conference and one is not being asked for, please contact the teacher as soon as you can. These reports need to be signed and sent back to school on Monday.

IXL – We have acquiered a trial membership for IXL for all our kindergarteners. We will be using this to practice counting sets to 20, and addition skills. We will be visiting the computer lab twice a week to do this.

WHAT A GREAT WAY TO TEACH OUR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS TO BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT THEY HAVE: The NPH Giving Tree-  Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an international organization that takes in abandoned and orphaned children, providing a home and education.  Discovery School teachers have played an important role in visiting a group of children from the orphanage for more than 7 years, and this year will hope to provide shoes and socks for each of these children.  A giving tree has been set up on the second floor of the secondary building.   Tree tags have the children's size information. Items need to be returned to school by Tuesday, December 4th. For more information, see Mrs. Christina Agurcia. November is the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. We are going to be covering a unit about things we should be thankful for.

YUMMY! There will be a MINUTA DAY this Friday, November 9.  Please support the ABSH Language Arts Committee by purchasing Minutas on that day (L25).

Thank you to Fiorella Alvarado who donated the ingredients for last week’s Kindergarten Kafe. The children made a Jack O'Lantern out of cookies, orange frosting and candy corns. Yummy! This week Ian Rodriguez will bring the ingredients for our next Kafe. We are also going to be having fun making fruit kabobs! Yummy!!!
